Chronolith: Interni 2026

Chronolith, Exhibited in the courtyard of the Università degli Studi di Milano as part of INTERNI Materiae during FuoriSalone 2026, Chronolith is conceived as a material installation before it is an architectural statement. Designed by DAAA Haus and produced by Recobel by Hal Mann Vella, the pavilion is constructed entirely from reconstituted Maltese limestone, assembled into a circular structure that draws on the enduring presence of traditional stone architecture while employing a fully contemporary production process. The stone is produced through the reaggregation of construction demolition waste, combined with cement binders and specialised admixtures to form a new architectural material. This process preserves the visual qualities typically associated with Maltese limestone, including its warm coloration and sensitivity to light, while enabling the material to perform as a durable and modular building system. Rather than being applied as cladding, the stone in Chronolith is used as cast, solid architectural elements. The installation is composed of monolithic vertical slabs in which the material performs simultaneously as structure, surface, and spatial organizer. These solid pieces define enclosure, guide movement, and modulate light through their mass and spacing, allowing the installation to operate as a temporal device shaped entirely by material presence. In this way, Chronolith positions reconstituted stone as a recycled substitute and a future architectural material, capable of carrying cultural continuity while responding to contemporary environmental and construction demands.
