I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP
I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP was Malta’s Pavilion at the prestigious 60th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. The Pavilion explored the legacy and meanings of ship graffiti, humble drawings and ex-voto motifs found on historical chapels across Malta.
The exhibit intertwined cultural heritage and AI driven technology through Virtual Reality (VR). The meaning of these anonymous ship drawings still resonate today, in an age where computer technology and the Internet have fuelled widespread freedom and disrupted tradition. A parallel can therefore be drawn between these stone carvings and contemporary digital drawing. They are symbols of hope that reveal hidden truths beneath predictions, emotions and beliefs.
The 5.5m x 2.5m reconstituted stone wall represents the historical walls onto which ships graffiti were carved into. As an ode to the past and to stay true to the artwork being presented by the artist, the size of panels used for the exhibit conform to a typical stone block.
