AKKA

AKKA, responds to Malta’s pressing ecological and spatial challenges. With land scarce and quarries scarred by extraction and demolition waste, the project highlights the implementation of Recobel’s reconstituted stone block, an innovative material developed by Recobel’s very own Head of R&I and academic, Professor S. Buhagiar. Conceived as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional limestone block, AKKA engages vernacular methods of construction, while challenging perceptions of stone as static and impermeable. The installation positions the reconstituted stone block, both as a material and a message, that embodies continuity and renewal based on circular economy, whilst proposing a sustainable architecture that honours Malta’s past while envisioning a cleaner, greener future.
